“What Child Is This?” is a very popular Christmas song written about 150 years ago to the tune of “Greensleeves”. It uses a chord progression similar to chord sequnces I used to play as a small child - maybe you did too. Watch this short piano video:
Quite often we don’t take the time to analyze the music we play, but if we did we would often find it much easier to understand than we would otherwise think in terms of chord progressions and musical form. Take a familiar tune such as Greensleeves and break it down to its basic components and we find a simple chord progression that repeats in four measure increments, then a contrasting section of four measures, followed by 4 measures that kind of combines the first section with the release - a very logical musical form.
